In a book written by A.G. Mohan, he recalls T. Krishanamachaya ( aged 85 at the time) demonstrating 32 variations of headstands for him.
It is important to note that all inverted postures are done with a strong core will enable the practitioner to lift the legs and move different directions. It is the suppleness of muscles which helps him/her stay in the posture. Hence, it is essential that one needs to work on developing the physical strength as well as flexibility of muscles to derive maximum benefits from Sirsasana/headstand or Sarvangasana/shoulderstand.
One cannot practice yoga without attention. With coordinated breathing, as in vinyasa krama, for practicing inverted postures is targeted towards achieving and maintaining a good quality breathing.
These inversions and the variations in them help to keep the spine supple and strong. It is said one is as old as the condition of the spine. Further, because of the relaxation of the lower extremities Sarvangasana/shoulderstand is a good pose to help overcome insomnia. These twin poses are very good for health.
The regular yoga posture practitioner will be able to explore more of his or her potential through this workshop.
