◎ Why practice pranayama ?
Disturbances in the body and mind alter our breathing pattern. Breathing becomes faster when we are excited and deeper and calmer when we relax. To influence our prana (vital energy), we must be able to influence our mind. Our actions often disturb the mind, causing prana to leave the body. Daily practice of pranayama reverses this process, as a change in breathing patterns influences the mind.
The Yoga Sutra states that when we practice pranayama, the veil gradually lifts from the mind, and it becomes increasingly clear. The mind becomes ready for deep meditation. Following the Yoga Sutra, we can say that pranayama is above all an awareness of the breath.
The purpose of pranayama is not to establish a specific relationship between inhalation and exhalation, nor to set a particular duration for each breath. Rather, the true objective of the various pranayama techniques and breathing patterns is, above all, to provide us with numerous opportunities to follow the breath. When we follow the breath, the mind is drawn into the activities of breathing. In this way, pranayama prepares us for the stillness of meditation.
Yoga pranayama is a progressive process, in which you work with the coarser, or more external, aspects of your being, then move inward, engaging in more subtle practices that gently lead you to meditation.
